Dr. Maura Isles makes her living dealing with death. As a pathologist in a major metropolitan city, she has seen more than her share of corpses every day–many of them victims of violent murder. But never before has her blood run cold, and never has the grim expression “dead ringer” rung so terrifyingly true. Because never before has the lifeless body on the medical examiner’s table been her own. Yet there can be no denying the mind-reeling evidence before her shocked eyes and those of her colleagues, including Detective Jane Rizzoli: the woman found shot to death outside Maura’s home is the mirror image of Maura, down to the most intimate physical nuances. Even more chilling is the discovery that they share the same birth date and blood type. For the stunned Maura, an only child, there can be just one explanation. And when a DNA test confirms that Maura’s mysterious doppelgänger is in fact her twin sister, an already bizarre murder investigation becomes a disturbing and dangerous excursion into a past full of dark secrets. Searching for answers, Maura is drawn to a seaside town in Maine where other horrifying surprises await. But perhaps more frightening, an unknown murderer is at large on a cross-country killing spree. To stop the massacre and uncover the twisted truth about her own roots, Maura must probe her first living subject: the mother that she never knew . . . an icy and cunning woman who could be responsible for giving Maura life–and who just may have a plan to take it away. Minus one star because of Maura Isles. That bitch... Look. The book is okay, the suspense is alright, the gory things are fun, Jane Rizzoli has evolved into something tolerable and she's less whiny now compared to the first and second book, but let's not rejoice yet people. Someone just has to destroy my happiness and that is Maura. If there's such thing as a classy slut, then you gotta give it to her. Someone just has to destroy my happiness and that is Maura. If there's such thing as a classy slut, then you gotta give it to her. On the third book, The Sinner I was already giving her the evil eye because of her character. Let's just forget that she's kinda depressing me with all of her whining and her insecurities. Scratch that because who am I to tell you to suck it up and be a badass? So no. What really irked me is her skill to have the hots for every fucking hot looking guy who looked at her stared at her as if the guy is probing her soul. Puta. The following are the guys who she have some attraction with. Her ex husband: I can understand this one. Old flame and all... A hot priest: They looked at each other and they developed this but-it's-forbidden-so-let's-just-try-to-ignore-our-attraction-to-each-other-but-let's-also-try-to-tempt-fate-by-being-seeing-each-other-as-much-as-always relationship. A hot doctor: They also looked at each other and she flushed. She felt some heat creep up into her face and all that bullshit. A detective: which really irritates me because she has some inkling that the guy is just helping her because she reminds him or someone and take this, she wanted to distance herself because she knows it's not good and when she was in danger, she has a choice on who to spend the night with. 1. HER PREGNANT FRIEND WHO IS 8 MONTHS PREGNANT AND WHOSE HUSBAND IS OUT OF TOWN AND IS ALL ALONE IN HER APARTMENT or 2. THE DETECTIVE WHO SHE SHOULD BE STAYING AWAY FROM. Because you're a bitch in heat who wants to scratch the itch of sexual frustration and stop the loneliness, OF COURSE YOU'RE GOING TO CHOOSE NUMBER 2!WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?! And in case you're wondering, she didn't end up with any guy because -ha!- she deserves it. P.S: There's nothing more annoying than a heroine whose heart started beating wildly just because a good looking guy looks at her. This is not fucking disney you dipshit. This is a mystery book and please stop acting like a sex-deprived teenager. Stop ruining a nice book. *stomps feet*

Now she encounters a confusing, unthinkable scene as the taxi approaches her home. She can’t even get to her door, as the yellow police tape and squad cars block her entrance. Maura is not the only one who is shocked and bewildered. Everyone who sees her does a double take. Why? Because the victim of the shooting in front of her home looks exactly like her. As a medical examiner, Dr. Isles instinctively wants answers. Because of the circumstances, however, she must recuse herself from this case. That doesn’t mean she won’t seek the truth on her own. She’s not entirely on her own. The police are involved – Detective Jane Rizzoli lends a hand, even though it is not her jurisdiction. Most of the information comes from a detective in the Newton Police Department, Rick Ballard. He knew the victim and agrees to do whatever he can to assist Maura. My first thoughts about this book were that it is a little bit far-fetched. I can’t even write much about it without spoilers. Eventually, I decided to just see where the story would take me. When the remains of more victims started turning up, I wondered where this would end up. Could these cases possibly be related? Then we got snippets of a live victim – was this person still alive, or was this the author’s way of showing us how the killer operated? The killer – insane or simply evil? There was even less of Detective Rizzoli in this one than there was in The Sinner, and that was a bit disappointing. Having seen all that Maura went through with her ex-husband in that book, I felt guarded, even protective, about her relationships this time around. I don’t find Maura as unlikable as many readers do, apparently. I didn’t quite trust Ballard, even though he is a cop. Despite the almost tabloid bizarreness of the plot, I found this book hard to put down. There is quite a twist at the end that I did not see coming. Overall, it didn’t quite hit the mark as well as the previous book, but I still found it to be suspenseful, albeit creepy at times; therefore, I will definitely continue with the series.

Maura Isles returns home from a business trip abroad to find a very strange reception. There are emergency vehicles clogging her street with neighbors and friends within the Boston Police Department looking at her as if they’d seen a ghost. Maura’s pursuit of her past leads to some startling and stunning revelations, investigated by an eight-months pregnant Jane Rizzoli who didn’t let that slow her down one bit. Maura’s findings subject her to danger from unknown sources, which only heightens the anxiety. There are also two other situations in play that seem to be disconnected from Maura’s circumstances but deep down I knew they would eventually intersect. They both were harrowing, playing to my worst fears. This is my most favorite in the series to date and I’ve enjoyed all of them. The narrator was just excellent and I hope she continues. I’m so enjoying these stories, even though they are nerve wracking at times...just the way I like it.

Her past catches up to her when a woman who could be her double is found shot outside her apartment. Isley must discover who this woman was, who killed her, and why she's next on the list. Full of twists and turns and enough mystery to keep you guessing until the end. Perfect blend of fear and excitement!

When a murdered woman turns out to be Dr. Maura Isles’s twin sister that she never knew about, Maura starts searching for answers about her biological parents. The more she learns, the more she wonders if some things are better left not knowing. This was a thoroughly captivating read with some genuinely chilling moments. Disturbing and a bit twisted, as well. It kept surprising me throughout.

Ve birde Maura var.Kendisine hala tam anlamıyla ısınabilmiş değilim.Hatta üçüncü kitapta resmen gıcık olmuştum kadına.Maura'nın kendisine bakan, hatta süzen her yakışıklı adamdan etkilenmesi,hoşlanması gerçekten beni yer yer gıcık etti.

I just finished this book this afternoon and I utterly enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. I was completely gripped from the first page. The book is full of twists and turns and I was totally not expecting that ending! It was the first crime novel that I've read in a long time where I was wrong about who the killer was (I normally guess the killer correctly before I'm halfway through the book). I'm looking forward to reading some more of Tess's books in the future :) PS: I also watch the TV show I just finished this book this afternoon and I utterly enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. Tess Gerritsen has done it again! And this one was amazing! Boston medical examiner, Dr Maura Isles, was relaxing for a few days in Paris after a conference before heading home, and back to work. When she arrived back in Boston, she discovered the airlines had lost her luggage, so after filling in lost property forms, she finally hailed a cab to take her home. She was exhausted from the long flight, so when she roused herself from the doze she'd been in, the cabbie was braking hard, and talking to her...there were flashing blue lights and police everywhere, and they seemed to be right outside her house! She quickly exited the cab, and made her way down toward the crowd of police, to be greeting by shocked looks, looks of total confusion from her colleagues! Detective Jane Rizzoli, who was very pregnant, was standing in the middle of what was obviously a crime scene, and when she noticed Maura, she looked dazed, like she was in a trance, as she looked from the vehicle in front of her, to Maura.... Maura and Jane are thrust into a crime so horrendous, so horrifying, it's hard to comprehend. With the murder of Anna, who, after a DNA test, turns out to be Maura's twin sister (with Maura being an only child!), the trail leads to disturbing evidence of something far more sinister than it first seemed! With the twists and turns of a really good thriller, the dark secrets of the past, both recent and long ago, this story had me unable to put it down. I was sure I had the 'bad guy' but I was stunned to realize I was wrong, and totally shocked to find out who it was! I totally recommend this to all lovers of suspense...Tess Gerritsen writes a masterful tale!

Another good book in the Rizzoli and Isles series. I liked getting more background on Maura's life, although if I were her it would definitely be unsettling. Weaving past history and past murders to the current murder was an interesting plot and a good read. My only complaint is I would have definitely liked more in the epilogue. Unfortunately in series like this there seldom is that thorough of epilogue with all the players in the plot.

Glorious murder fest in a great series. Any plot mention would give something away but Isles finds out about the dark history of her family, Rizzoli works some gruesome murders whilst eight months pregnant and the body count is high. Brilliant twists here and there and a high speed thrill fest from start to end. Darned good stuff.

Being a fan of the hit TNT television show, Rizzoli & Isles, I felt drawn to the books that inspired the characters. Tess Gerritsen vividly brings Boston homicide detective, Jane Rizzoli, and medical examiner, Dr. Maura Isles, to life in the pages of this book. This is not the first book in the series, but one doesn't need to have read the prior novels to understand what's occurring in the plot. Gerritsen backtracks to prior knowledge when it's needed to discuss pertinent backstory. Gerritsen backtracks to prior knowledge when it's needed to discuss pertinent backstory. I chose this book because the description on Amazon grabbed my interest more than any other of the books in this series. With that said, I found this story so interesting and ultimately captivating that author Tess Gerritsen has found a new reader in me. I recently ordered a few more of her books from this series. The fan of the T.V. show and the novels will be able to detect the foundation for the characters in the books, but Janet Tamaro, who is responsible for writing the scripts for TNT, has taken Gerritsen's characters and made them uniquely her own. In fact, there are times when the reader wonders if she’s reading about the same characters that inhabit the television series. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There are enough interesting character points present in both interpretations to hold one’s attention. Overall, the basis for Tamaro’s television characters can be found in the writing of author, Tess Gerritsen. Gerritsen is a physician in addition to being an author. You can feel it in the way she writes. She speaks to the reader through her character, Dr. Isles, who seamlessly explains to us the intricate details involved in the novels’ murders. Anyone who watches Rizzoli & Isles on TNT knows that humor plays a large role in the stories. On T.V., Dr. Maura Isles is one of the most quirky, lovable characters on television. The literary version is much more cool and removed. The humor that enlivens the television series is not evident in the novel version. The books don’t seem to suffer as a result of that fact. The stories are so fast-paced and pulling that one forgets that there’s very little humor in them. I was in awe of how intricate and creative Gerritsen’s story was. In Body Double, Maura is faced with a murder victim who looks distinctly like her. As the plot unfolds, the story leads Maura and the reader down a path of discovery behind the adopted Dr. Isles’s family history. What occurs as we reach the conclusion is compellingly intriguing. It’s the kind of writing that makes it nearly impossible to put down. I read this book in two days. Body Double is a fantastic, quick, mind-bending read. With it, Tess Gerritsen has earned herself another fan.

Tess Gerritsen has done it again! A thriller that is high on suspense, tension and plot and low on the confronting gore that thwarts so many of the books in this genre. Dr. Maura Isles arrives home from an overseas conference to discover police investigating a murder just outside her home. A thriller that is high on suspense, tension and plot and low on the confronting gore that thwarts so many of the books in this genre. The victim is her exact double and turns out to be the identical twin sister Maura never knew she had. This of course poses many more questions than answers for an adopted-at-birth person such as Maura. Why was her sister murdered? Can she now trace her real mother? Was Maura the intended target instead of her sister? How did her sister find her? Did she have other siblings? The storyline takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride of twists turns and tumbles as the true extent of the plot is revealed. A very well written and thoroughly absorbing thriller. You just can't go wrong with Tess Gerritsen.

I enjoyed this book much more than the other Tess Gerritsen book I read, Vanished. This one was quick and entertaining. Unfortunately, I don't think this was the next one in sequence like I thought it was. She made references to things that happened in other books that I haven't read yet so that kind of ruined it. I can't read The Surgeon now becuase this book gave away the ending. I found Maura and Jane to be more likable this time around. I kept running the possibilities around in my head trying to figure it all out. The ending caught me by surprise, it all finished up in the last 10 pages. I was late for work becuase I had to finish reading it before I left.

Another great audio book about Rizzoli and Dr. Isles. This time it was focused on Dr. Isles and her life. Someone is murdered outside her house who is identical to Dr. Isles. This starts a path that Maura starts to wonder if she should have gone down. There are lots of twits and turns and second guesses on who did it. It has a shocker to the end. There are some creepy characters and some characters you grow to like. I also drive too far up in the parking garage when I get to work because the story is so engaging. Very enjoyable.

I just read The Likeness by Tana French and now I'm reading this. In both, the story is about a dead woman who looks exactly like the main character who now has to investigate the murder. Strange. LATER ... the stories are totally different. This was a solid investigative thriller, with some surprises. A quality read.

This book picks up the thrilling pace of the first two. Whilst learning more about her history, Isles becomes the main character of the book and rightly so. The story is punchy and unexpected. Fantastic read.

Gerritsen tackles the 'nature versus nurture' debate in this next book in the Rizzoli and Isles series. A great thriller, filled with familial bonding and questions about one's upbringing with or without parents.

Yet again Tess Gerristen has had me hooked! I'm aware that perhaps I should be reading her books in order but actually she has done a brilliant job in engaging me.
